Our best ever season!
2018 has been the best ever season for Central Coast Heart.
In the first year after being promoted to Division 2, our Metro League team finished in fourth place.
Our Under 20's Premier League team finished in third place - a fabulous achievement for such a young squad (and a huge improvement after last year’s seventh place finish).
And our Premier League Opens were the first team to qualify for the grand final to be held on Wednesday 26 September.

Go Heart!

Coast Sport Tip: Netball strength to master in the off season

After a short, well-earned, end-of-season break, the off-season becomes an important time to build strength and conditioning
for injury prevention next season.
  • Below are three injury predictor tests that Coast Sport routinely use in pre-season screenings - you can use these as part of your off-season strength and conditioning program to reduce your netball injury risk.
1. Single leg squats: With arms across your chest and standing on one leg, squat as low as you are comfortable at a rate of one squat every two seconds. Perform three sets of ten squats.
2. High knee tuck jumps: Jump repeatedly for ten seconds with high effort, tucking your knees up as high as possible. Try to land in the same spot on the ground with each jump, and then immediately begin the next jump. Repeat three times.
 3. Single leg triple hops: Standing on one leg, hop as far as you can along a straight line three times and stick the single leg landing on the third hop. Repeat three times on each leg.

Coast Sport offers netball screenings and tailored exercise prescription to ensure that you are at your best to perform. Coast Sport is also an accredited provider of the Netball KNEE Program.

The season may be over, but there’s still more netball
to be played

Central Coast Heart is supporting our vibrant and passionate netball community by conducting a twilight competition during October-November with an emphasis on fun and participation.
We’re so excited that over 70 junior, senior and mixed teams have registered for 2018 Social Twilight @ Gosford.
For further information refer to the
Central Coast Heart website.
And thank you to our friends at Gosford Netball Association for providing the courts and facilities for this competition.

Central Coast Leagues – Helping our Aussie Farmers

Aussies everywhere are responding to calls to help our struggling farmers to cope in these devastating drought conditions and Central Coast Leagues, and their members, are no exception.

In August Central Coast Leagues commenced a Drought Appeal to contribute towards our Aussie Farmers, who are not only having trouble keeping their animals alive, but who are also struggling to feed their families and to keep their farms. Their goal is to raise $20,000 worth of contributions from their members and the local community, which Central Coast Leagues will match dollar for dollar, a total contribution goal of $40,000, with all funds going to Rural Aid. Not only have Club members embraced and supported this worthwhile cause, but local businesses have run their own fundraisers to contribute funds to the Central Coast Leagues Drought Appeal.

Archie’s Brasserie at CCLC has also gotten on board with a special fund raising offer of their own.  For every Parmigiana purchased at Archie’s Brasserie, Archie’s and Central Coast Leagues will donate $5 to Australia’s drought stricken farmers.

Central Coast Leagues is still raising funds and welcomes any contribution, large or small, to assist in this appeal to support our farmers.  So come in, enjoy a Parma and make a donation to our farmers.

To make a donation - please visit Central Coast Leagues Club Reception or call 4325 9888.
All donations will go directly towards Rural Aid.

2018 June News Update!
Premier League Update - Opens

Our Central Coast Heart Opens team has had the best start possible to the season with three wins from three starts putting them in second position on the Samsung Premier League ladder (after for and against are considered). In round one our Opens team beat the UTS Sparks 57 to 45. This was the first time in three years that our Opens team has beaten the Sparks in the regular competition rounds, a victory made even sweeter because it was against last year’s runners up.

Round two saw our Opens team get on top of the Sutherland Stingrays in a match that had two distinct halves. The first half was closely fought with only three points separating the two teams. An increase in intensity and defensive pressure in the second half saw Central Coast Heart run away with the match and record an emphatic 62 to 35 win.

Last week’s third round match against Panthers certainly put our Opens to the test. After getting out to a ten point lead at quarter time, our Opens took a while to adjust to the lift in game intensity from the Panthers and consequently lost the second and third quarters. In a less than polished performance, Central Coast Heart fought hard to hold on to their lead in the fourth quarter running out eventual seven point winners, 66 to 59.

Despite her team’s winning start, coach Amber Cross says there is still plenty of room for improvement for her team. “We’ve played some fantastic netball, but we still need to work on being consistent across four quarters. We have some tough games ahead of us and we will need to make sure that we treasure possession more if we are to continue our winning ways.” What has pleased Cross the most in the opening rounds is her team’s belief in their abilities and the confidence that each player is bringing to the court. “There are no weak links in our team at the moment. We have depth and versatility in all areas of the court, which is something we didn’t have last year, and it’s proving the difference in our performance.”

Premier League Update - Under 20s
The Under 20s team has been on a roller coaster ride for the first three rounds of the Premier League competition.
In round one, two of our Heart Metro League players, Jacinta Clark and Teah Faimanu, came into the team (in place of Jazmyn Rodwell, Brooklyn O’Mara and Isabella deVivo who were representing Sydney North at the CHS trials) to play against UTS Sparks. This was the first hit out in the Premier League competition for most of the Under 20’s and they adjusted to the pace of play extremely quickly to come away with an outstanding 20 point win (final score 57-37).

In round two, the team had a narrow loss against the Sutherland Stingrays (final score 46-48). Our young Heart players learnt a lot from this game and are confident of a stronger performance when they meet the Stingrays again in round nine.

Having embraced the lessons of round two (in particular, how to enter the court with intensity and and keep it up for the whole game) the Under 20s put in a very impressive performance in round three to beat the Penrith Panthers by 26 goals (final score 61-35).In our next game on 20 June, we take on North Shore United in a top of the table clash. Be sure to tune in to BarTV to watch another exciting game from our youngest Hearts.

Metro League Update -
Come along and support our local team - Central Coast Heart!
Metro League is one of the premier netball competitions in New South Wales, offering week in-week out competition for some of the state’s most talented and up-and-coming  netballers, coaches, umpires and administrators.
Similar to previous seasons, 60 teams participate in the competition - divided into six divisions of ten. The games are played across three nights each week, with teams contesting 18 rounds before a final series in September.
The Central Coast Heart Metro League team plays on a Thursday evening in Division 2 and are currently, after nine rounds, ranked fourth on the competition ladder.
Head Coach Jess Morgan said “I’m very pleased with how the team is progressing at this stage of the season. We have an excellent group of athletes who all bring unique experiences and qualities to the team. The transitional play is starting to gel, with the team becoming more familiar with each other’s style of play. Going into the second half of the season, we will continue to focus on high intensity at training and games, communication on and off court, as well as having a low error rate. Each match is set to be a tough one, but this team has exceptional capability to knock off each opponent they face. I am proud to say that I have every confidence they will maintain their reputation as a team who play fair, hard netball and who fight until the final whistle.”
Come along and support our team on Thursday 28 June at Genea Netball Centre when they play top of the ladder Manly Warringah at 7pm  - it is sure to be an exciting, closely contested match

An Open Heart - an insider’s look at an elite training session
On the evening of Monday 4 June our Central Coast Heart Premier League teams opened the doors of their training session at Central Coast Adventist School so that local coaches could come and watch the Opens and u20s teams being put through their paces.
At our first Open Coaching session of the season, facilitated by Di Brown, Central Coast Heart’s High Performance Pathways and Programs coordinator, there were 18 Central Coast and Hunter coaches plus athletes from the Central Coast Academy of Sport netball squad in attendance, all eager to observe and absorb the intensity and work rate of an elite training environment.
The overwhelming feedback from the coaches in attendance was that they were thrilled with the opportunity to listen and learn and that they walked away with many handy training tips, drills and methods to help their own game. They were also able to quiz our u20s Head Coach, Megan Sharpe, for further insights following the training session.
If you missed out on this training session, you can still register below for our second session on Monday 25 June which will be facilitated by Marion van Munster who was an Assistant Coach of the Hunter Jaegers Commonwealth Bank Trophy team in the National Netball League Competition, coached the Hunter Jays and was Assistant Coach of the prestigious New South Wales Institute of Sport program.

Blowing the Whistle - Central Coast Heart Umpiring Program
All three Central Coast Heart scholarship umpires have been busy umpiring at the Metro League competition at the Genea Netball Centre - with Jess Alexander travelling to Sydney Olympic Park every Tuesday evening and Karlee Farthing and Rachael Shallow travelling down every Thursday evening.
Under the close guidance of Central Coast Heart Head Umpire and Mentor, Kath Styant, our umpires have been improving their skills and on Wednesday 14 June they took a field trip to the Premier League competition to watch our Heart athletes with a focus on the creation of attacking options.
In addition, all Central Coast Heart umpires represented Gosford Netball Association at the recent Netball NSW State Championships held at Adcock Park West Gosford.
A fantastic standard of umpiring is being produced by all of our Heart umpires - locally, at Metro League and at State Championships!

Central Coast success at State Championships
Central Coast teams have had successful campaigns in the 2018 State Championships and 2018 State Championships Masters.
The State Championships Masters was held at the Genea Netball Centre over the weekend of 19-20 May with around 170 players playing a total of 214 games and scoring 3,387 goals. The Central Coast fielded three teams with Gosford Over 40s finishing runners up in a tightly contested division with the Wyong Over 40s finishing fourth and Gosford Over 35s finishing fifth.

On the June long weekend Gosford Netball Association hosted the 50th Netball State Championships. Despite the rain there was some extremely competitive netball involving over 1,000 athletes and around 70 associations. Our Central Coast teams did us proud and in the Open State Championship Gosford finished 4th, Wyong finished 5th and Woy Woy finished 9th. In the Under 17s Championship Division Wyong and Gosford finished 9th and 10th respectively and in Division 2 Woy Woy finished 19th.

Congratulations to all of our Central Coast netballers on these great results!

Winner of our Newsletter sign-up promotion collects

The winner of our newsletter sign-up promotion, Jen Sounness, enjoyed watching her daughter, Alexa, collect her prize last month. Alexa and her team mates from the Woy Woy Under 13s reps ran through a fast-paced training session with Central Coast Heart Opens captain, Amy Wild.
Amy’s session was a mixture of skills development, fitness and fun. Amy was very impressed with the team’s positive attitude and how eager they were to learn - possibly some Central Coast Heart stars of the future!
The session concluded with a question and answer session where Amy was asked about her netball career including representing Australia at Fast Five tournaments in both England and New Zealand.

Coast Sport Tip - Tight Calves
While having tight calves might not seem like the biggest problem, they can lead to more serious injuries over time including shin splints, stress fractures in the feet and ankle issues.

Tight calves can come about for a range of reasons - you may be doing large amounts of training (particularly in running based sports); not stretching enough compared to your training load; or biomechanical problems with your ankles or feet.

Stretching your calves is key however, always after (not before) exercise. For biomechanical issues it is best to see a professional to get properly assessed. Strengthening is also important and calf raises are a good choice.

Roy Morgan research reveals our favourite bank
What do you look for in a bank? Low fees, competitive interest rates, or good old fashioned customer service? Perhaps you seek out providers that are doing good with their profits by supporting charities or investing in local communities?

According to the latest research from Roy Morgan, the bank with the highest customer satisfaction levels wasn’t any of the big four.  For 12 consecutive months, Bendigo Bank has had the highest level of customer satisfaction when compared to the top ten largest banks, based on number of customers.

Ray Davidson, Chairperson of Wyong Town Financial Services, part of the network of five local Bendigo Community Bank branches on the Coast, says “We are very proud that we have such a high satisfaction rating with our customers. Our competitive product range, excellent customer service, and strong community focus are at the heart of these results.

“Our customers know that when they bank with us, their local community benefits. Since we opened our branches on the Coast in the early 2000’s, Community Banks have returned millions of our profits back into the community.”

Mr Davidson said that the Roy Morgan ratings are very relevant given recent public discussion about poor conduct in financial services and the dent that has been put in public confidence in the banking system.
“The five Central Coast Community Bank Branches are proud to continue their sponsorship of the Central Coast Heart again in 2018, and look forward to supporting the players over the season ahead.”
