Central Coast Heart showed their fighting spirit by posting a commanding 46-35 win over Manly Warringah Sapphires in Round 3 of the Samsung Premier League last night, Wednesday 4 May. It was the Heart’s first win of 2016, all the while delivering Sapphires their first defeat of the season.
From the first whistle the Heart impressed by using speed to move the ball quickly through the court, in turn creating space for movement and flow in the attack end. These opportunities were assisted by strong defensive outing from their backline, who helped provide plenty of possession for the Heart shooters to capitalise; particularly goal defender Demi Evans and goal keeper Laura Roger whose relentless defence resulted in several intercepts and deflections.
The Sapphires worked hard in the second half, however the Heart had proved too damaging in the second quarter – putting up 15 goals to Sapphires’ four – to take a healthy 15 goal advantage and a comfortable lead.
It was an almost perfect 60 minute performance from the Heart, who went on to post an 11-goal victory.
“I’m thrilled for my team to have secured their first win early in the season”, said Under 20s Head Coach Nerida Stewart. “The team have been training intensely and to be rewarded with a win is a real confidence boost for these junior athletes” concluded Nerida.
The Heart will now meet the Panthers for Round 4 next Wednesday 11 May, at 7pm AEST.
